Roger Pagel vs. NM Dane Mattson

Friday June 23, 2023 – SMCC Summer Blitz – $5 entry. 7 rounds of G/5;+3 blitz. USCF blitz rated for US Chess members participating. Top finishing club member wins spot in the Springfield, Missouri Chess Club’s Candidates tournament. The winner of that tournament is the year’s challenger for the club championship. Players in the club’s Candidates need to be current US Chess members at the time of the tournament in the fall or winter.

Saturday June 24, 2023 – SMCC Summer G/90 Quads – This tournament will have prizes but will also raise a donation for the Southside Senior Center, longtime home of the Springfield, Missouri Chess Club. Players will be ranked based on their most recent published US Chess rating and divided into sections of four players beginning with the top rated. Players will then face each of the other players in their section once.

If the lowest rated section has less than four players, it will be combined with the section above it for a 3-round Swiss on the same schedule as the quads.

When: Saturday June 24
Where: Southside Senior Center in Springfield, MO.
Entry: $25. First three titled players enter for free. Extra donations to the senior center are welcome.
Time control: G/90;d5
USCF Rated: Yes (US Chess memberships must be current before round 1)
Round times: 10:00 AM, 2:00 PM, 5:15 PM (or directly after second round if players agree)
Prizes: Top section 1st place $125. Other sections 1st place $65. The money remaining after prizes are paid out will be donated to the Southside Senior Center.

Friday June 30, 2023 – Roger Pagel Open – At our regular Friday meeting we will hold a farewell tournament for Roger Pagel, a longtime member and president of the Springfield, Missouri Chess Club, who is planning to move this summer.  This is an unrated tournament because each round will begin with one of the openings Roger is known for around the club.

When: Friday June 23 at 7:30 PM
Where: Southside Senior Center in Springfield, MO.
Entry: $5 donations to the senior center are appreciated.
Time control: G/20;d5

Round 1 – Smith-Morra Gambit. White moves first in a starting position after 1.e4   c5  2.d4    cxd4   3.c3    dxc3.
Round 2 – Smith-Morra Gambit. White moves first in a starting position after 1.e4   c5  2.d4    cxd4   3.c3    dxc3.
Round 3 – Alekhine Defense.  White moves first in a starting position after 1.e4   Nf6    2.e5   Nd5   3.d4   d6.
Round 4 – Alekhine Defense.  White moves first in a starting position after 1.e4   Nf6    2.e5   Nd5   3.d4   d6.
